As a discursive event in the history of modern Chinese literature that cannot be ignored, the Left-wing literature presents its own complexity and plurality. The Left-wing writers,as participants in this movement, have always emphasized their differences from the May 4th Movement. However,by examining the correspondence of the Left-wing writers,it is easy to find that there is more of an inseparable connection with the May 4th Movement.Modern letters,as the most personal and intimate texts,on the one hand, are the expression of the personal discourse of the May 4th Movement,in which writers can express their own emotions, opinions and ideas, and readers can also learn about the social history of the time through their letters. On the other hand, the letters of Left-wing writers often have special characteristics not found in the letters of other modern writers because of the special identity of their addressees and senders. This peculiarity was reflected in the publishing aspect, mainly due to the writers’ consideration of the low-risk political nature of the letters and the operation of the literary market, together with the social demand for the teaching of letters and the awareness of the preservation of writers’ historical materials at that time, which led to the first publishing climax of the letters of the Left-wing writers in the 1930 s.Among all the letters published, none was more remarkable than the love letters of writers, each of which was highly popular after publication. On the one hand, the publication of love letters by the Left-wing writers reflects the concept of “freedom of love” during the May 4th period;on the other hand,it can also show the differences in the perception of this concept by different writers, and these differences making the Left-wing literature presents a pluralistic situation in creation. In addition,at the early stage of the Revolutionary Literary Debates, the Leftwing writers’ letters which are published on the newspaper presented the struggle for the cultural right in the literary world at that time on the one hand, and could be regarded as one of the means for the Left-wing literature to expand its influence on public opinion on the other. As historical documents, there are also many parts of the letters that are worthy of continued in-depth study. To study the letters of the Left-wing writers from a bibliographic perspective,we need to summarize the classification and distribution characteristics of the letters of the Left-wing writers firstly. In the process of organizing and collecting the letters of the Left-wing writers,it is easy to find that the number of letters of the Left-wing writers is scattered and the phenomenon of anonymity is prominent,so it is necessary to collect anonymity and enrich the letters of the Left-wing writers as much as possible in the future.Among the published letters, there are also many problems that require researchers to proofread and to differentiate the true from the false. The study of the epistolary histories of the Left-wing writers is not only conducive to improving the personal histories of writers, but also to restoring the richness of literary history.
