| Iris Murdoch’s novel The Black Prince has been widely concerned by literary critics for its complex plot,superb narrative skills and profound philosophical thoughts.When domestic and foreign scholars study this novel,they often mention Hamlet,and find that there is a connection between the two works.Based on the French post-structuralist and semiologist Kristeva’s intertextuality theory,this study makes a horizontal and vertical analysis of The Black Prince.On the horizontal axis,the thesis analyzes the split subject of the protagonist Bradley,the voice of the other and the relationship between the writing subject and the reader,finds that there is no authoritative voice in The Black Prince and challenges the certain truth of Hamlet by creating a postmodern version full of uncertainty;On the vertical axis,the thesis analyzes the relationship between The Black Prince and its historical literature intertext Hamlet,the socio cultural intertext at that time,and discusses Murdoch’s response to the prevailing feminist wave and “the author is dead”.Through the above analysis,this study finds that Murdoch absorbed and transformed Shakespeare’s Hamlet in The Black Prince,reinterpreted the classic under the new social and cultural background,and added her own considerations of her own time into her creation on the basis of inheriting the wealth of classic literary works.This research has practical significance for readers to understand The Black Prince and reread Shakespeare’s Hamlet. |
