Abstract/Summary:
The Wanli era of the Ming dynasty was a period of revival in the development history of Chinese Buddhism, especially marked by the active participation of the Literati and Lay Buddhist. The participation of the Literati and Lay Buddhist helped make a very important contribution to the further localization and centralization of Chinese Buddhism. The Literati and scholar-officials were the core force for Buddhism protection.Their social status could not only give strong protection to Buddhism politically, but also strongly support the development of Buddhism both economically and culturally. This thesis will take the Kuixuetang Diary written by Feng Mengzhen,a famous Literati in the late Ming dynasty,as the study object, and reconstruct the buddhist belief life of the Literati and the Lay Buddhist in the late Ming dynasty by applying the religious sacred space theory from the western perspective. At first the buddhist practice activities which Feng Mengzhen participated in,such as visiting temples and friends, connecting with buddhist monks, building temples, freeing captive animals,Buddhism protection and so on,are clearly recorded in the Kuixuetang Diary. This is enough to provide the several key elements for construction of buddhist sacred space.Additionally,Feng Mengzhen provided Buddhist service actively as a Buddhist disciple.Wherever he went, the flowing sacred field was formed. At last, the theoretical paradigm of religious sacred space provides concrete representations for the less visible interpersonal relationships and social networks, and establish identifiable religious organization structure so as to reveal the characteristics of religious communities. The study of this thesis will help open up the multiple aspects of the southeast buddhist history in the Wanli era of the late Ming dynasty through specific details and re-examine the behavior and spiritualworld of the Lay Buddhist in the middle and late Ming dynasty from a microscopic perspective.
