Against the background of globalization, international academic exchanges become increasingly frequent.Various western academic works and scientific research achievements are continuously introduced into China. But its dissemination and development,to a large extent, depend on the translation and research of relevant text materials. Therefore, how to translate these English academic texts into Chinese and introduce them to domestic scholars in relevant fields for analysis and reference is of great practical significance. However,at present, the domestic academic text translation field has not received enough researches and arose intensive attention. Many academic texts translated into Chinese are of stiff writing, unclear terminology meaning and even errors, which cause obstacles to the understanding by target readers, which are harmful to academic communication between China and other countries. Thus, further studies of translation for academic texts become necessarily advocated, for which the present study attempts. This research aims at analysis of the academic texts on the basis of The Smoke of London as guided by Text Type Theory by(1)dividing the source texts in accordance with three text types proposed by Newmark;(2)attempting to find out features for each of the text types accordingly;and(3)analyzing the translation approaches adopted in the translation process and analyzing that whether the target text has effectively conveyed the intention of the source text by adopting the approaches. The study finds that among the three types in The Smoke of London, firstly, informative text is unexceptionally dominant over the other two;expressive text is the type attributed to informative type;and the vocative text that contain advertisements and speeches functions as an urge to action but merely within the context of the book while other vocations are not visible but could covertly be felt after reading the text.Secondly, these three texts interact with each other to form the main theme that the author intends to demonstrate.Thirdly, proper translation approaches could be madedepending on analysis of the three text types in order to offer reading-friendliness to the target readers, namely, informative texts are content-oriented and communicative translation approach should be adopted, which directly convey the original information based on conforming to logic and the reading habits of the target readers;expressive texts are effectiveness-focused and semantic translation approach should be applied to strive to be close to the original text in literary style, sentence structure, lexical collocation and figure of speech to enhance the truthful expression of emotion;and the hidden vocative text could be reserved under the guidence of communicative translation for evoking the readers’ echo. These findings imply that enough attention should be paid to the translation of academic work to functions of various text types, bear in mind the role of readership and take translation ethics into account.
