Anaphora plays a significant role in text coherence as it represents the internal relationship between linguistic units in a text. Therefore,it has always been the central topic of grammar and discourse theory. This thesis selects Frog,a representative work of Chinese local literature by Mo Yan and its English translation by Howard Goldblatt to study the phenomenon of anaphora. The main purpose is to discuss the characteristics and functions of anaphora in Chinese local literature, especially the manifestation of this phenomenon in its corresponding translation, and to summarize the application of anaphora in Chinese local literature and relevant principles of translation under the accessibility theory.Mastering the relevant theories and principles of anaphora analysis is not only helpful to the understanding and writing of texts, but also of great significance to the accuracy of translation for translation learners.Accessibility is a psychological concept which depends on readers’ information processing ability. It refers to the ease or complexity for people to extract a certain language or memory unit from the brain memory system in the process of language generation and understanding.Based on Ariel’s accessibility theory, this thesis makes a comprehensive study of anaphora under four factors that affect accessibility, contextual differences and accessibility levels.Firstly, the Tmxmall corpus alignment online system is used to process the corpus and a parallel corpus of Chinese and English texts of Frog is established. Then,AntConc software and manual batch retrieval through Microsoft Excel 2010 are used to identify anaphora in the corpus.According to the study,it is found that from a quantitative point of view, there is little difference in demonstrative pronouns between English and Chinese. The noun phrases and zero forms in Chinese are more than those in English, but the pronoun forms are far less. This thesis makes an in-depth comparative and contrastive analysis of typical anaphora in the two texts of Frog based on the accessibility theory, including the influence of anaphora choice under four factors that affect accessibility, the performance of anaphora markers in different contexts, the correspondence between this phenomenon and three kinds of accessibility markers and the role of anaphora as cohesive device in discourse. It is found that the anaphora expressions have a high correspondence with the three accessibility markers proposed in the accessibility theory, and the factors affecting accessibility and different contexts complement each other in the process of selecting the phenomenon. In addition, accessibility theory is generally applicable to the analysis of anaphora in English and Chinese texts, but there are differences in translation. These differences are mainly reflected in the conversion of Chinese nominal anaphora with English specific anaphora,Chinese demonstrative pronouns with English definite article modifiers and Chinese personal pronouns as well as zero anaphora with English personal pronoun. Also, all these markers take significant effect in textual cohesion. This study further proves that accessibility theory is of guiding significance to the study of anaphora in Chinese and English texts. At the same time, applying the conclusions drawn from comparative and contrastive analysis of texts to translation practice is conducive to standardizing the translation of anaphora in Chinese to English, and to a certain extent to the external dissemination of Chinese native culture.
