An E-C Translation Practice Report On Machine Translation Post-Editing Of Management Text Excellence Now:Extreme Humanism(Excerpts)

This translation practice report is based on an E-C translation of a management text commissioned by the company where the author did an internship,for which the author adopts MTPE mode,obtaining a translation using Youdao Translate and then making editing afterwards.This report summarizes,exemplifies and analyzes the problems in machine translation and proposes corresponding post-editing methods in the hope of providing some enlightenment for translators and proofreaders as well as designers and researchers of machine translation engines.This translation practice report contains four chapters: description of the translation task,description of the translation process,MTPE case analysis and a summary of the translation practice.In the main body of the report,the author makes analysis of problems found in Youdao machine translation at vocabulary,syntax and discourse levels,and then comes up with some corresponding editing suggestions and strategies.Problems on the vocabulary level were mainly found in the translation of abbreviations,polysemous words and proper nouns;problems on the syntax level were mainly found in the translation of parentheses,long sentences and aphorisms;and problems on the discourse level were mainly found in discourse cohesion,discourse coherence and format of the text.During this process,it was found that machine translation based on artificial intelligence,neural networks,natural language processing,deep learning models and other technologies has achieved rapid development.However,due to characteristics of machine translation itself and the limitation of technical means,there still exist many problems in the translation produced by machine translation engines,such as inaccurate judgment of part of speech and meaning of words,confused or even erroneous logic,nonfluency and poor readability,improper composing and format,etc,which requires further editing by translators.MTPE mode requires translators to further improve their language ability,the ability to search information and the ability to apply tools,so as to combine the advantages of machine translation and human translators,and eventually to deliver high-quality translations to target readers.
