Study On Pan Pingge’s Thought Of "Pursuing Benevolence"

As an adherent of the Ming dynasty,Pan Pingge’s thought of “pursuing benevolence” was influenced by the change of the Times,which had great significance and value for the development of Confucianism.The study of Pan Pingge’s “pursuing benevolence” thought can not only improve the study of Pan Pingge’s thought,but also understand the development of academic thought in the late Ming and early Qing dynasty.Panzi asks for benevolence is the only book that has been handed down by Pan Pingge.Therefore,this book is the starting point and foothold of the research on Pan Pingge’s thought of “pursuing benevolence”.According to the analysis of his thought,Pan Pingge mainly reveals the method and connotation,path and main body of his thought of “pursuing benevolence” from the following aspects: “pursuing benevolence for the purpose”,“investigation of things and forgiveness”,“work diligently without felling tired”,“practical personality”.In short,Pan Pingge started from benevolence through thinking and ambition.Then Pan Pingge was committed to achieve no separation self and others through the behavior.After that,the whole process of “pursuing benevolence” will be carried out through the efforts of dedicating one’s will and doing one’s best.Finally,with the ambitious Confucian image to achieve the ideal goal of pursuing benevolence,it also means to achieve the unity of the universe and all.In this paper,the research on Pan Pingge’s thought of seeking benevolence is mainly carried out from the following four parts.The first part is to explore the background of Pan Pingge’s “pursuing benevolence” thought.The second part is to reveal Pan Pingge’s theory of “pursuing benevolence” and its connotation.By studying Pan Pingge’s work,the first thing to understand about Pan Pingge is to explain the main idea of sages and to read original works to discern the purposive meaning of the study.Then through the criticism of the theory of “Li and Qi” from Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi,“abandoning the true heart,recognizing the spirit and the perception as the heart” from Zhu Xi,“discussing ‘Nature’ with ‘Qi’” from Wang Yangming,“knowing the mind and understanding,knowing the emotion and talent”,and the research on the connotation of “Li”,“Qi”,“Heart”,“Nature” that Pan Pingge agrees with,it is revealed that Pan Pingge’s thought of “pursuing benevolence” aims at benevolence.After the analysis of “unity in order”,finally that “my nature is the unity of heaven and earth as one of the kernel” thought is explained.The third part isto study Pan Pingge’s thought of “pursuing benevolence”,and to analyze it from three aspects: the achievement of “pursuing benevolence”,the reality of “pursuing benevolence” through “filial piety” and the theory of “pursuing benevolence”.The fourth part is Pan Pingge’s theory on the “practical personality” of “pursuing benevolence”.Pan Pingge thinks that the most perfect practice subject is the scholar with ambition,and he also advocates to realize the ideal goal of “pursuing benevolence” through it,that is,seeking benevolence to restore goodness.
