| With the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019,the pandemic soon spread to the world.Under such circumstances,North China University of Science and Technology and the University of Pecs decided to held online the Board Meeting of Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)at the University of Pecs on June 3,2020,in which the author was responsible for the English to Chinese interpreting. The Confucius Institute for TCM at the University of Pecs was jointly established by the two universities in 2015.It serves as a bridge in the promotion of the Chinese language and the popularization of TCM between China and Hungary,Tangshan and Pecs, and the two universities.Videoconference interpreting has unique features and faces many challenges different from traditional face-to-face interpreting. This report, guided by Chesterman’s Translation Ethics, discusses the strategies that interpreters could adopt in videoconference interpreting. It first analyzes the features and challenges of videoconference interpreting, and then combs the interpreting strategies adopted by interpreters in the task, attempting to answer two questions:1)What interpreting strategies are adopted under different circumstances of videoconference interpreting;2)How Chesterman’s Translation Ethics are manifested in different interpreting strategies.Through analysis,it is found that videoconference interpreting is faced with many challenges, such as limited-time,the lack of non-linguistic information and interaction, high reliance on network as well as many unexpected situations. These challenges put forward higher requirements for interpreters of their on-the-spot reaction. Therefore, interpreters should be proficient in six interpreting strategies, namely summarization, allocating a turn, confirmation, addition, conversion, and omission,so as to deal with different circumstances in videoconference interpreting. Moreover,Chesterman’s five models of translation ethics, namely, the ethics of representation, the ethics of service, the ethics of communication, the norm-based ethics, and the ethics of commitment, restrict and guide the interpreter and the interpretation at different levels, which are reflected in the six interpreting strategies.Previous studies have rarely touched upon topics related to videoconference interpreting. However,as the pandemic has been penetrating every aspect of life, more traditional conferences tend to be held online. Therefore, this report can shed some light on the strategies that interpreters could adopt to ensure accurate and appropriate interpreting for online conferences. |
