A Report On Consecutive Interpreting For The "2019talents Projects Assessing Meeting" From The Perspective Of Chesterman’s Models Of Translation Ethics

This report is based on the interpreter’s experience of consecutive interpreting for a medical research project in the Talents Projects Assessing Meeting of Licheng District held in 2019.Sponsored by Licheng District Government of Jinan City,this meeting aimed to attract and retain urgently needed talents and high-end projects in key industries and promote the rapid development of key industries.In this Meeting,the interpreter took on a consecutive interpreting project of a cancer mechanism and treatment research,which was sent to be assessed in the meeting.The task was very challenging for the interpreter due to a large number of medical terminologies,the form of the video conference,and the fast delivery of the source information.Guided by Chesterman’s five models of translation ethics,this report reflects on the task of consecutive interpreting.It explores the choices of different translation strategies and their effects under the guidance of ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment in the process of interpreting through case analysis.With deeper understanding of interpreting activities,the interpreter finds that models of translation ethics can provide instructions for interpreters.This report aims to demonstrate the significance of Chesterman’s translation ethics for interpreting practice and provide reference for other interpreters.Therefore,when interpreters are faced with professional interpreting tasks,such as medical interpreting,they can adopt appropriate interpreting strategies,improve the quality of interpreting and promote cross-cultural communication.
