A Report On The C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Allen Zhang's 2019 WeChat Open Class Conference From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Guided by Skopos Theory,this report explores the major difficulties encountered and the corresponding interpreting strategies adopted during the process of interpreting the speech by Allen Zhang at WeChat's Open Class annual event.The interpreting difficulties encountered in this case include a large number of culture-loaded words,specific terminologies,redundancy expressions,metaphorical expressions and logical confusions.Guided by the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of Skopos Theory,this report illustrates four strategies to tackle the interpreting difficulties:(1)Literal interpreting,i.e.,maintaining the original stylistic form,including the original sentence structure,rhetoric devices and so on,so that the target reader can easily understand the meaning of the source language content;(2)Free interpreting,i.e.,delivering the intended meaning of the source language by transforming some details such as syntax,style of the original language to meet the cultural habits of the target audience;(3)Amplification,i.e.,adding further information to make the interpreting more consistent with the target language context and increase comprehensibility of the target language content;(4)Omission,i.e.,dropping a word or words from the source language to avoid redundancy without changing the meaning of the original content,and thus making the interpreting more concise.This report explores four interpreting strategies in light of specific cases,in the hope of providing further reference for other interpreters.
