In the development of metaphysics, the problem of free will has always been a particularly difficult one, which is full of challenges to human reason but also gives pleasure to human reason. The reason why the issue of free will has become one of the topics of urgent concern is that it involves the most fundamental problems in people’s real life, such as freedom, morality, religion and other metaphysical problems.People hope that their actions will not only influence the world and it in the way we expect, but also depend on and originate from ourselves in a fundamental sense. Therefore,it is of theoretical and practical significance to study the issue of free will, which is more helpful for human beings to deepen their understanding of their own nature. This paper mainly discusses Hume’s free will theory, and uses the method of combining history, logic and dialectic analysis in the research method.Through the analysis and tracing of Hume’s free will problem,Hume’s free will theory and the free will problem Hume is trying to solve and the position and significance of Hume’s free will theory in the history of the development of free will in western philosophy.Hume’s discussion on the issue of free will mainly focuses on the theory of human nature and the study of human reason.Hume’s discussion of free will can be divided into three aspects. The first is the relationship between freedom and necessity.Hume no longer separated freedom from necessity to discuss the relationship between them, but emphasized the compatibility of the two.Hume thought freedom was the understanding of necessity, not the opposite of freedom;the second was the relationship between free will and moral responsibility.Hume opposed to viewing human moral problems from the perspective of determinism and non determinism. He thinks that human moral freedom is not to refer to moral freedom without reason, but to moral freedom which is not restricted and bound by external environment;third, the relationship between free will and religion.Hume’s discussion on the relationship between free will and religion lies in his efforts to liberate human beings from superstition.Hume’s free will problem provides theoretical basis and solution path for modern and even modern people to solve the problem of free will.It is also of great significance to enrich and develop the freedom theory of Marxist Philosophy in China.
