Study On The Translator’s Creative Treason In The English Version The Field Of Life And Death From The Perspective Of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion

From the perspective of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion,this thesis analyzes the creative treason in Howard Goldblatt’s English translation of Xiao Hong’s The Field of Life and Death.The author found with examples that the translator’s creative treason runs through all stages of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion:Howard Goldblatt’s "trust" based on his bilingual proficiency and translation experience,as well as his preference for Xiao Hong and her works;in the“aggression"step,Howard Goldblatt exerted creative treason through translation methods such as additions,deletions,and structural adjustments due to the translator’s own understanding of the original work and the language and culture difference;the translator "incorporated" the original text and transplants the meaning and form of the original text into the target language;since the first three steps will inevitably cause imbalance in the translation,the translator needs to“compensate" the translation with addition to achieve the balance of the translation.The Field of Life and Death contains rich connotations and traces of traditional culture and its translator Howard Goldblatt makes contribution of "Chinese culture going out",but the number of studies on the translation of The Field of Life and Death is very rare.The author hopes that this thesis can enrich the research on creative treason in the translation of The Field of Life and Death,so as to promote "Chinese culture going out" and strengthen the spreading of Chinese literary works overseas.Meanwhile,due to the insufficient research on the theoretical perspective of the translation of The Field of Life and Death and the lack of research on the theoretical perspective of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion,the author hopes that this thesis can rich the theoretical perspective of its translation.
