| Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu written by Yuan Tingdong,is selected as the translation object of the translation report,which depicts the history and development of Chengdu’s streets and alleys as well as related historical events.Since the source text belongs to hybrid text which is characterized by informative text abundant with culture-loaded words,the translation report,under the guidance of Cultural Translation Theory,taking the translation of culture-loaded words as the starting point and discussing the translation techniques,aims to retain cultural connotation and boost cultural exchanges between China and the West.The report,guided by Cultural Translation Theory which studies the culture rooted in the source language,strives to reproduce cultural images and promote cultural exchanges to the maximum.The report considers Cultural Translation Theory pertinent and applicable,which can effectively help translate the culture-loaded words.Besides,this report divides them into five categories in line with Nida’s classification of culture,namely,social culture,material culture,religious culture,ecological culture and linguistic culture so as to better translate culture-loaded words.Then,under the guidance of Cultural Translation Theory,domestication,foreignization and other translation techniques are adopted to maintain the characteristics of the source language culture and make the target text readable and acceptable.All these methods are to help target readers have a better understanding of Chinese culture and further boost Ba-shu culture.Finally,the practice has shown that Cultural Translation Theory could help transfer featured cultural information and provide a reference for translating Chinese historical documents. |
