| The Syntaxe nouvelle de la Langue chinoise fondée sur la position des mots is the masterpiece of Stanislas Julien(1797 or 1799-1873),a French Sinologist in the 19th century,on the study of the Chinese language. This book is divided into two volumes to explain syntactic rules of Classical and Modern Chinese respectively, the objective is to demonstrate the "rules of word position" that facilitate learning Chinese.Rich and varied, the book’s corpuses are all presented alongside the Chinese and foreign versions.Julien takes linguistic examples not only in classical Chinese works, but also in novels and theaters. He translates the opinions of Chinese linguists during the Qing Dynasty, and also critiques the views of European researchers,in order to found a new system of Chinese study while bringing together the qualities of Chinese and European research.According to the French name of the book,it is clear that the essential idea is the word position which represents a new way to study Chinese. Therefore,it is necessary to analyze how this work establishes its means of research while inheriting the advantages of old grammatical books in Europe, and also to question to what extent do "rules of word position" influences methods of learning and studying Chinese in France. To answer these questions, this thesis offers four chapters. The first chapter puts Julien’s life into consideration. It is a question of clarifying his experiences of foreign languages’ study and of sinological research,of finding the relations between his research and their interests to affirm the position of the Syntaxe nouvelle de la Langue chinoise fondée sur la position des mots among all the works of Julien. At the same time,we analyze the content of the book and its writing to demonstrate the academic value of the book.In the second chapter,we focus on the grammatical part of the book and identify the criterion according to which Julien designates the classes of Chinese words. Then we reflect on the method with which Julien selects the research results of Chinese linguists and those of European sinologists, and he explains the "rules of word position"in his own way.In the third chapter, the translation of the three great passages is within our discussion. With literal analysis,we are interested in the criteria by which Julian chooses passages, which serve as examples,in books of classical and modern Chinese. We also criticize the extent to which the "rules of word position" guarantee the accuracy of the Sino-French translation. In the last chapter,we put the Syntaxe nouvelle de la Langue chinoise fondée sur la position des mots within the framework of the history of French sinology. With educational results from the Ecole speciale des langues orientales vivantes,we analyze the contribution of Julien’s work. And with feedback from European experts,we assess the book’s influence on the history of Sinology and on the study of Chinese in Europe. |
