This study conducts two experiments with the boundary paradigm of eye tracking technology to explore whether the position information coding in the recognition process of Chinese two-character words with different morphological structures is affected by textual predictability.Experiment 1 compared the magnitude of the character transposed effect of simple words, subordinate, and coordinate in the context of high predictability. The results show that in the context of high predictability, the character transposed effect in the first fixation time, single fixation time and gaze time indicate that the flexibility of two-character Chinese words position information still exists. In addition, the present study found that transposing character position of subordinates cause more damage to normal reading than that of coordinates.Experiment 2introduces predictability as within-subject variable to directly compare the magnitude of the character transposed effect between subordinates and coordinates. Results indicate the existence of a stable character transposed effect, and this effect is not adjusted by the level of predictability.Based on the results of Experiment 1 and Experiment 2,the present study shows that in the recognition process of Chinese two-character compound words, the coding of position information is flexible, and the flexible coding of position information is not regulated by the textual predictability.
