In the Chinese art world from the 11 th to the 13 th centuries,"imperial-court decorative painting" and "scholar painting" stood side by side at the forefront of Song painting, revealing its poetic meaning more or less in a broad sense. This poetic sense is not only reflected in the art form that emphasizes a combination of cultural cultivation and artistic interest, but also implies the rising group of literati painters’ inner consciousness of realizing the subject consciousness and cultural character of painting. As relatively independent art forms in the traditional Chinese culture, poetry, calligraphy, and painting, since the Tang Dynasty, have gradually become integrated in terms of historical origin, authoring techniques, spiritual temperament, and temporal logic, especially in the Song and Yuan Dynasties. As a result,a richer graphic meaning and linguistic form was formed in visual terms.During the turbulent dynastic periods of the Song and Yuan dynasties, the scholars under the influence of different political environments, after experiencing such realities as the promotion of literature and the suppression of military power, the waning of the scholarly style, the change of regime, and the choice of career path, have more dimensions of practical possibilities to bring out the "meaning" in their work of art deriving from their own spiritual dilemmas and spiritual destinations. The article explores and compares the pictorial and literary meanings of Song and Yuan "poetic painting",conducting a general analysis of its humanistic characteristics and artistic character from the reasons for the emergence of "poetic painting",its development in the two different historical periods of Song and Yuan, the connotation of poetic and pictorial meaning, the expression and interaction of pictorial and written language in the works, the response of poetic painting to reality, and the influence and meaning to later art word. The paper consists of introduction, body(four chapters in total),and conclusion. The introductory part mainly includes an overview of the artistic ecology of Song-Yuan "poetic painting" and the current research status of this field home and abroad. The first chapter focuses on the concept of "poetic painting" and the development of "poetic painting" in the Song and Yuan dynasties. From a macroscopic perspective,we compare and clarify the phenomenon, aesthetic development, cultural context, background and connotation, and graphic style of " poetic painting " in Song and Yuan dynasties respectively. The concept of "poetic meaning " in "poetic painting" is sorted out and its origins and changes are presented. Finally, through the above explanation of the representation of " poetic painting " and the comparison and enumeration of typical phenomena in typical periods, the importance of the temperamental characteristics of "poetic painting" in the Song and Yuan dynasties as an important development node of Chinese painting which promotes the development of literati painting in later generations is concluded.Chapter 2 focuses on the concept of "meaning",deriving the typical expression of "meaning" in "poetic painting" through an overview and analysis. The third chapter introduces the presentation and transmutation of poetic and pictorial meaning in " poetic painting " in the Song and Yuan dynasties. It focuses on the depth of understanding of "poetic meaning" and the differences of their poetic and pictorial meanings in different historical periods of Song and Yuan dynasties,as well as their manifestation and aesthetic concern in the pictures. The second chapter elaborates on the meaning of " poetic painting" in the Song dynasty with "painting with poetic heart","realism together with imaginary",and "unusual while reasonable".The third chapter elaborates on the meaning of "poetic painting" in the Yuan dynasty in terms of "plain and innocent","seclusion",and "subtle beauty" respectively. The fourth chapter and the remaining part mainly elaborate and discuss the influence of Song and Yuan "poetic painting" on later art world and its relevance to contemporary painting, and also put forward the flaws of this paper and the topics and areas to be studied.
