At present, the prevalence rate of psychological problems is high in China, while the rate of psychological help-seeking is low.It is of great practical significance to pay attention to individual psychological help-seeking and mental health. However, previous studies on the relationship between self-esteem and psychological help-seeking have inconsistent conclusions, and practice has shown that blindly pursuing high self-esteem is not necessarily good, high self-esteem is heterogeneous, and some types of high self-esteem are better than others. Therefore,we try to apply the high self-esteem heterogeneity hypothesis framework to the field of psychological help-seeking and mental health, and examine the influence of self-esteem types on individual psychological function among Chinese college students. In study one,"the Rosenberg self-esteem scale","Self-esteem Contingency scale","Seek Psychological Help Attitude Questionnaire","Self Rating Depression scale",and "Self Rating Anxiety scale" were adopted among 551 college students to explore the impact of the level of self-esteem and self-esteem contingency(high self-esteem to individual sense of self is often originated from different expectations, and meet some good standards, the self-esteem tends to be fragile)on depression, anxiety and attitudes towards psychological help-seeking.SPSS software was used to investigate the effects of self-esteem types on depression, anxiety and attitudes toward psychological help-seeking by using ANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The self-esteem types were divided into low self-esteem individuals, fragile high self-esteem individuals and secure high self-esteem individuals. The results showed that:(1)The Mean ± SD score of self-esteem level was 2.81±0.44 under the 4-point score, and the Mean ± SD score of self-esteem contingency was 3.29±0.47 under the 5-point score. The overall self-esteem level and the level of self-esteem contingency of college students were higher, and female’s self-esteem contingency was higher than that of male.(2)There was a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and depression、anxiety and attitude towards psychological help-seeking.The self-esteem contingency was significantly positive correlated with depression and anxiety, but not with attitude towards psychological help-seeking.(3)In terms of mental health, the depression level of female was higher than that of male, the depression and anxiety of low self-esteem individuals were higher than those of fragile high self-esteem individuals, and fragile high self-esteem individuals were higher than those of safe high self-esteem individuals.(4)Regards on the psychological help attitude, rural areas were more negative attitude than urban areas;people without psychological help-seeking experience were more negative attitude than people with experience;low self-esteem individuals on the enthusiasm of psychological help attitude significantly below the fragile and secure high self-esteem individuals, but there was no significant difference between fragile high self-esteem individuals and secure high self-esteem.Therefore,study one couldn’t prove the high self-esteem heterogeneity hypothesis in the field of psychological help seeking.Considering the limitation of self-report scale, and vulnerable to the influence of social expectations, behavior experiment was used in study 2.The behavior experiment of single implicit association test task aimed at measuring the implicit attitude towards psychological help-seeking from cognitive appraisal, emotional reaction and behavior tendency, and examed the possibility that different types of high self-esteem individuals had different implicit psychological help attitudes.Totally 651 college students were invited, and each group of the fragile high self-esteem individuals and secure high self-esteem individuals had 30 students to participate in the experiment, respectively. The results showed that the both fragile and secure individuals with high self-esteem tend to be positive in the cognitive evaluation dimension of their implicit psychological help-seeking attitude, but they tend to be neutral in the emotional response and behavioral tendency dimension.Different types of high self-esteem have no significant difference in the overall implicit attitude towards psychological help-seeking.In this study,we tested the influence of self-esteem types on mental health, but failed to prove the hypothesis of high self-esteem heterogeneity in the theme of attitude towards psychological help-seeking.This study suggests that we should pay attention not only to individuals with low self-esteem but also to the mental health status of individuals with fragile high self-esteem,which is often hidden. Therefore,it’s worth to attaching great importance to the cultivation and pursuit of safe high self-esteem regarding to the improvement of mental health literacy.
