| This paper is a practice report on the C-E translation of Zhangjiajie: A Wonder of the World(Chapter 6,Section 1).The book systematically introduces Zhangjiajie’s natural landscape, history and culture, and tourism services. It integrates local tangible and intangible heritage for tourism promotion. The selected part involves historical events and cultural relics, creating a new label of cultural tourism on Zhangjiajie.Due to the special geography and complex ethnic relations,Zhangjiajie has lagged behind in development.Few people know about its history and culture. Therefore, this task is attempted to translate the history and culture of Zhangjiajie. The content is divided into four parts, including historical evolution, uprisings, modern history, cultural relics and historic sites, with a total of more than 10,000 words. The source text has three features.Firstly, many proper nouns with local characteristics come from different historical periods, like the names of local political systems, official titles, and the names of historical relics.Secondly, literary Chinese and four-character words are mostly used in historical documents and inscriptions with concise expression.Thirdly, the source text involves some errors, including typographical errors, misinformation, and unverified historical facts. As a tourism promotion book, how to correctly convey historical information to the outside world will become the key and difficult point of this practice.According to Katharina Reiss’ s text typology, the informative text focuses on plain communication of facts. The text’s translation criteria are summarized as follows: accurateness, logic and smoothness. The selected text is defined as the informative text in this translation practice. In accordance with three translation criteria, the translation applies adaptation strategies,i.e.,explanation,reformation and abridgment,so as to achieve three goals of this translation practice.Explanation refers to annotating local characteristic terms. To deepen reading comprehension, specific translation methods include footnote, inserting annotation, and blending annotation. To enhance readibility of the target text, reformation is to appropriately change the form and content of the source text, which is mainly used in translating literary Chinese.Abridgment refers to retaining the source text’s main points and simplifying details to meet western readers’ needs. In the process of translation, using computer-assisted translation(CAT)tools greatly improves the quality and efficiency of translation. The report is intended to enlighten other translators with similar translation tasks, serve the local museum, and provide foreign tourists with Zhangjiajie’s tourism and cultural information. |
