| This is a report about the on-site interpreting in the Pakistani Military Aircraft Manufacturing Base and the main form of interpreting is consecutive interpreting. The report is based on the two pieces of recording texts of on-site interpreting, one is about a lesson which was given by a Chinese quality control inspector, and the other is about a weekly meeting attended by two sides.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory, problems that the interpreter encountered in the on-site interpretation are listed, many cases in the process of interpretation are analyzed, and the translation strategies and skills that applied in the interpreting are discussed. The introduction to interpretation task is made from three aspects: project introduction, introduction to on-site interpreting task, project characteristics and requirements. The nature, the key product, the cooperating parties, and the location of the project are mainly introduced in the project introduction. In the introduction to the task of on-site interpreting, the interpreter’s workplaces and working content in the site for half a year are mainly described. In terms of the characteristics and requirements of the project, this report mainly discusses accuracy, timeliness and impartiality of the project and what requirements the interpreter should achieve in interpretation according to those three characteristics. When the report describes the preparation for interpretation, the collection of project background knowledge, the establishment of glossary and Relevance Theory are introduced.Meanwhile, the report also mentions the background of the project, which mainly describes the military situation of Pakistan and the work site. The part of the establishment of glossary mainly describes the preparation work in the early, middle, late and temporary stages. Moreover, the preparation of the theory is the key point to support the whole report,in which the concept of Relevance Theory, its development at home and abroad, and its applicability to on-site interpretation in the aviation industry are introduced.Through elaborating the difficulties and solutions, four problems from the perspective of cognitive context are firstly summarized: lack of professional knowledge in aviation field, problems in non-standard Pakistani English pronunciation, grammatical mistakes of speakers, and illogical expressions of speakers. Then, under the guidance of Relevance Theory,a series of solutions are proposed. In order to achieve the optimal relevance, the cases with poor translation are analyzed and improved, and the translation strategies and skills are analyzed for the cases with good translation, including omission, amplification, conversion, explicature translation, implicature translation, etc. The interpreter also contextualizes the process of interpretation from the perspective of cultural context and situational context to produce appropriate translations.Through the task description and case analysis of the on-site interpretation project in Pakistan,it can be concluded that the pre-interpreting preparation is crucial to the success of interpreting, and full preparation enables interpreters to solve the problem in the face of any change;Relevance Theory can successfully guide interpretation tasks in the field of aviation manufacturing;the speakers’ informative intention and communicative intention can be quickly and accurately conveyed by contextualizing the source text to get the optimal relevance. Finally, the interpreter hopes that the case analysis of this task will improve the interpreter’s ability of interpreting, and provide some reference to other scholars in the interpreting of aviation manufacturing. |
