The Application Of Optimal Relevance To E-C Interpreting

The purpose of this thesis is to study interpretation strategies for “Apple’s NewProducts Publication Conference in2013Fall” in light of relevance theory.Relevance theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson, as a communicative theoryof cognitive pragmatics, is dedicated to the studies of ostensive-inferentialcommunication and is orientated to establish a general principle of interpreting theinner mechanism of human communication. To comprehend and represent theinformative and communicative intention of the speaker, the interpreter needs toselect the appropriate context, combine information with his or her own cognitiveenvironment and make inference about the speaker-intended assumption. At thereproduction stage of the target language, the interpreter needs to pay attention to thelisteners’ cognitive environment and express the communicative intention of thespeaker with words that match the most relevance.Last but not least, to help interpreters better grasp the nature of interpretation,make the best choice of words and guide them in practices, the interpretationstrategies in the relevance theory perspective are proposed for interpretation alongwith the suggested interpretation skills.
