Although the country is vigorously promoting quality-oriented education,junior high school English teaching still cannot completely get rid of the traditional exam-oriented education mode under the pressure of high school entrance examination.Coping with the examination is still the main purpose of English learning.English learning has become a mechanical rote,and students’ interest in English learning and cross-cultural awareness are out of the question.The overemphasis on grammar and language points and neglecting the cultivation of students’ practical ability of language use has resulted in large investment but little effect in teaching.In order to change the current situation of junior high school English teaching,it is imperative to "enrich curriculum resources and expand English learning channels" to provide students with a real language environment.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)points out that rich and colorful curriculum resources are particularly important for English learning.Language learning requires a lot of input.English courses should actively utilize audio,video,radio and television,etc.to expand the channels for students to learn and use English.It also points out that it is necessary to help students understand the diversity of the world and form cross-cultural awareness through experiencing the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign cultures.Based on this background,English movies have become an excellent teaching resource.As a communicator of culture,film is the enrichment of life and the artistic representation of life.It has rich cultural connotation and is a modern comprehensive art that reflects social life.The application of English movies in junior high school English teaching breaks the traditional English teaching mode,mobilizes students’ visual and auditory senses,creates an ideal language environment for students,enables students to get in touch with rich language and authentic expression,and understands foreign cultures,which is conducive to the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness.In recent years,domestic and foreign research on the application of movies in English teaching has been on the rise.However,most of the researches are mainly based on college students,while the research objects of high school students,especially junior high school students,are relatively rare.This research aims to solve the following three problems by applying English movies to junior high school English teaching: 1.How does the application of English movies in junior high school English teaching affect the language ability of junior high school students? 2.How does the application of English movies in junior high school English teaching affect the learning motivation of junior high school students? 3.How does the application of English movies in junior high school English teaching affect the cross-cultural awareness of junior high school students?The research is based on relevant research results at home and abroad,and supported by four theories: Constructivism,Input Hypothesis,Affective Filter Hypothesis and Malinowski’s Context Theory.It adopts literature research method,questionnaire survey method,interview method and experimental research method.In this study,students in two classes of eighth grade in a middle school in Liangjiang New District,Chongqing,where the author teaches,were taken as experimental objects to carry out a one-semester experimental study of English movie teaching.Choose one class as the experimental class and the other as the control class.Before the teaching experiment,pre-test the English proficiency of the two classes.During the teaching experiment,English movie teaching experiments were conducted on the experimental class,and the control class adopted the traditional teaching mode.After the teaching experiment,post-test the English proficiency of the two classes,conduct a questionnaire survey on the experimental class,and select several students in the experimental class for interviews.After the experiment,the author collected the data of the pre-test and post-test scores and questionnaires,and used SPSS software for data analysis.The study found that: 1.There was no significant difference in the pre-test scores between the experimental class and the control class.The English level of the two classes was equivalent before the experiment.There was a significant difference in the post-test scores of the experimental class and the control class,and the experimentalclass was significantly higher than the control class.It shows that the application of English movies in junior high school English teaching can effectively improve the language ability of junior high school students.2.The results of the questionnaire show that most students think That English movies are helpful to their English learning,which stimulates their interest in learning,and they have made progress in this process,and they will actively watch English movies to learn English in the future.It shows that English movies have effectively stimulated the English learning motivation and interest of junior high school students.3.The results of the interview show that the students all stated that they have a deeper understanding of the culture of Western countries.It shows that English movies have cultivated students’ cross-cultural awareness.In summary,the application of English movies to junior high school English teaching can effectively improve the language skills of junior high school students,stimulate their motivation and interest in learning English,and cultivate their cross-cultural awareness.
