Gold and silver inlaying is an ancient and unique craftsmanship in China. As a decorative craft on the surface of artifacts, gold and silver inlaying first appeared in bronze wares in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, which was mostly combined with jade carving works from the middle of the Qing Dynasty to the modern times. There are rare researchers devoting in this unique fine gold craft,so that the depth of existing theoretical studies is unsatisfied, especially its theory of design has not formed a systematic framework.More regrettably, few workshops, domestically and abroad, can complete a full set of design and production due to the complex production process and uncertain inheritance of the craft, hence there are few ancient or recent works currently.Furthermore, practitioners’ ability in design is unsatisfied, who always followed the old path to make the gold and silver inlaying instead of studying deeply on pattern design and innovation. The author summarised the historical evolution, styles, characteristics, definition, and selection of materials of the gold and silver inlaying craftsmanship via reviewing relevant literature and conducting fieldwork, the production process and steps was also clarified by demonstrating a practice process of the craft. The final project of “elegant gold and carving” series examined the unique artistic characteristics and expression of the gold and silver inlaying craftsmanship from the perspective of design, which was created following the concept of technicality, aesthetics, innovation and pragmatism in design. This series included the exquisitely carved teapot, the accessory of the symbolic design idea, the bracelet of the eastern aesthetics, the bracelet of the balanced decorative principle, and the ornament applied innovative materials. The thesis uncovered the ancient craftsmanship of the gold and silver inlaying theoretically and practically via studying on the specific design and craft of the jade carving works. |
