| The period from the late Qing dynasty to the early Republic of China was the turning point for modern education in China.It played an essential role in the history of education in our country.Under the background of the educational reform in the new era,the proposal of establishing morality and cultivating people,and enhancing cultural self-confidence has paid more and more attention to the education of traditional culture.This study selected two series of local science textbooks published by the Commercial Press at the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China as the research object,aiming at examining the characteristics of traditional culture in science textbooks.Specifically,based on the literature review,this study constructed a detailed content category and an integration analysis framework of the traditional culture embedded in science textbooks.Following these two analysis frameworks,coding statistics and case analysis of the local science textbooks at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China were developed.The results showed that:(1)Science textbooks mainly focused on the practicality integrated with the traditional culture.(2)Educational function played an essential role in the science textbooks embedded with traditional culture.(3)The traditional cultural materials embedded in science textbooks were rich in.(4)The presentation of the traditional culture in local science textbooks was relatively simple,which was with less attention to concepts and demonstrations.Implications for the compilation of science textbooks:(1)Pay attention to the appropriateness of traditional culture in science textbooks.(2)Enrich the traditional cultural materials in textbooks and coordinate the relationship between various content types of traditional culture and natural sciences.(3)Achieve the educational purpose of helping students correctly understand our country’s path of scientific development by integrating ancient science and technology culture into textbooks. |
