A Study On The "Wo Zhi Shi Shuo Shuo"-Type Illocutionary Force Denial Marker

Austin（1962）made the idea that language is often used to “do things” a consensus.Every speech act has illocutionary force,Existing research mainly focuses on mitigation,which is defined as the modification of a speech act’ illocutionary force,but less attention is paid to the phenomenon of illocutionary force denial.In communication,the speaker can use a certain form of language to deny the implementation of illocutionary force.We call this form the illocutionary force denial marker.This paper takes the type of “wo zhi shi shuo shuo”,a common and typical illocutionary force denial mark in modern Chinese,as the research object.This paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter clarifies the object of study——the formal criterion of "wo zhi shi shuo shuo "-type illocutionary force denial mark,and summarizes the previous research on the illocutionary force,pragmatic negation and discourse negation marks.The second chapter mainly focuses on the function and characteristics of "wo zhi shi shuo shuo"-type illocutionary force denial marker.This kind of marker achieves the function of illocutionary force denial by explicitly violating the rules of sincerity.The effect of illocutionary force denial on truth-value of proposition is different from that of pragmatic negation.This illocutionary force denial maker has both conceptual meaning and procedural meaning,which is different from discourse markers.The third chapter combs out the variants of “wo zhi shi shuo shuo”-type illocutionary force denial marker,and its combination with other components.Through collating and analyzing the corpus retrieved from BCC,it is found that the structure of this type of marker is relatively independent,although it has various variants.Chapter four classifies illocutionary force denial according to its different effects,including revocation denial and negotiation denial.Illocutionary force denial can deny the illocutionary force of various speech acts as well as the illocutionary force of possible indirect speech acts.Chapter five analyzes the procedural functions of the "wo zhi shi shuo shuo"-type illocutionary force denial marker,including textual function and interpersonal function.In terms of textual function,this type of linguistic force denial marker has two scopes,which appear in flexible positions and play different roles in the turn.In terms of interpersonal function,explicit denial hides the role of maintaining the face of the speaker and both sides in communication.
