Literature translation, especially the translation, introduction, overseas publication and propagation of contemporary Chinese literature, provides good opportunity for the world to hear the voice from China,go approaching the connotation of rich, colorful and splendid Chinese culture and transfer the ideology and value which are utterly different from that of western countries. As a particular literary genre, short story boasts of its features of short in length, rich in vocabulary, varying in syntax, vivid in language and diversified in style. So the translation and introduction of contemporary Chinese short story may achieve more intuitively and conveniently the ambition to spread and disseminate Chinese culture, facilitate the pace of the overseas disseminating of Chinese culture and promote the international influence of China. This paper is a practice report of the C-E translation project, which is based on the short story “Father in the Attic” composed by the contemporary Chinese writer,Shao Li.The novel, taking the reminiscence of the incident of the father’s death(jumping off the rooftop)as the core of the narrative, tries to raise the readers’ contemplation on those relationships between father and son, father and daughter and the couples. And the author by which presents in front of the readers the transition of family ethics in China, the integration and convergence of family ethics both in China and western countries so as to construct a maturer outlook on life.Based on Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, this report, through the detailed analysis of the concrete cases of translation practice and focusing on those difficulties in the process of transition, such as the four-character Chinese idioms, simple style, stifling language and the features with rich culture-loaded information and culture-loaded dissemination, investigates how to achieve the natural and apposite equivalence of the source text and the target text by adopting effective translation strategies and approaches under the guidance of the theory. At the lexical level, the semantic equivalence is largely achieved by adopting of the translation approaches such as liberal translation,a combination of liberal translation and annotation or conversion;at the level of syntax, the approaches such as combination, omission, recasting and division are adopted to achieve the natural and fluent treatment of the translated text;at the level of discourse, the focus falls on the text analysis and linguistic features. The translated text,by adopting methods such as liberal translation and the combination of literal translation and annotation, manages to achieve the semantic and stylistic equivalence. The translation report is divided into five parts: the first chapter is a description of the translation task, which introduces the background of translation studies, the introduction of the original text and the literature review of relevant research both at home and abroad;the second chapter is an overview of translation theory, including the origin and development of Functional Equivalence Theory and the significance of the theory as the guidance of the translation practice;the third chapter is a description of translation process, including the preparation before translation, the process of translation and the correction after translation,The fourth chapter is the case study mainly on vocabulary, syntax, discourse and the approaches applied in the process of translation. The fifth chapter is the summary of the translation practice including the introspection upon and the shortcomings in the translation practice and countermeasures.
