| Jeanette Winterson is a contemporary British writer,The Passion is her second novel, the work fully reflects the diversity of creation and rich imagination of Winterson, the novel is set in the Napoleonic wars, tells the story of Henry and Villanelle in different life experience,it shows the pain and confusion of the little people in the war and expresses the author’s concern for individual life. The research on this novel at home and abroad mainly focuses on the gender and post-modernist narrative,This thesis starts from the perspective of subject construction to analyze how the hero and the heroine build up their independent personality after the pain of war and love. The author thinks that on the one hand, the author achieves self-healing by describing the experiences of the hero and heroine,at the same time,it also endows the works with profound connotation,it provides us with useful guidance in the complex realities of life, how to love others and how to gain the freedom of mind and body to live a more rational life. This thesis uses Lacan’s Mirror Stage Theory to start from the hero and heroine, first of all,it analyzes how Henry and Villanelle in the Mirror Stage Period establish the ideal image of self, and points out the important role of parents, lovers and family circumstances. It is under their eyes that the self-image of the hero and heroine is formed. Then from the perspective of the illusion of Mirror Image,it analyzes the identity dilemma and the loss of subjectivity that Henry and Villanella encountered. Finally,it analyzes the process that Henry and Villanella re-established their independent subjects through their recognition of love and free after fleeing the battlefield. The author believes that the pursuit of the subject’s personality contained in this work is of great inspiration to the modern society, and the love and free reason it reveals are necessary for modern human beings, because each individual can live a better life only when he knows how to love others, how to overcome the temptation of passion and how to maintain an independent self. |
