This is a translation project report.The source text of the report is a medical book co-written by Constance Hamman and Edward Watkins.Depression(Third Edition)shows readers the phenomenon,process,groups as well as treatment plans of depression.The selected translation section is from the first chapter of the original text,mainly about the clinical diagnosis of depression and the challenges facing the diagnosis approaches.According to the analysis of the text,the source text is determined to be the medical informative text,which involves a large number of semi-medical words and medical technical terms.There are also many passive sentences as well as long and complex sentences included.When translating such texts,the translator uses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation as a theoretical guide,and completes the translation practice recourse to medical references and translation techniques such as division to finish the translation project.This report is made up of five chapters.The first chapter presents the background and significance of the translation project,and sorts out the structure of the report;the second chapter expounds the detailed information--the author and main content of the source text,and at the same time,analyzes the features of the source text from both lexical and syntactical levels;the third chapter states the guiding theory of the translation-communicative translation;Chapter four explains the difficulties of translation,such as the translation of long and complex sentences as well as passive sentences in the ST,and thus proposes corresponding solutions based on theoretical basis--Communicative Translation and translation techniques like inversion,and division;Chapter five,also the last chapter concludes the insights obtained by the translator in the process of translating and the imperfections during the investigation.After the translation practice,the translator has deepened her understanding of depression,and at the same time realized the importance of reading and mastering relevant medical texts and the terminology for more accurate translation.
