A Report On Medical English Translation

As living standard grows，medical science is playing an increasingly important role in ourdaily life. Frequent translation and introduction of new medical articles and papers can keep usinformed about the latest development in medical science abroad. This report is anintroduction and description of my translation experience as well as my methods andcharacteristics in translating some medical material.The translated texts consist of four popular medical articles and one medical paper. Thefour medical articles are from Voice of America and the medical paper is downloaded fromWANFANG MED ONLINE. The four medical articles are of some health knowledge that isclosely related to our life. The paper about the methods of treating asthmatic/rhinitis childrensensitized to house dust mite in a trial. The two parts of translation material are in differentlevels of translation difficulty, which, as it is hoped, would offer the translation as muchexperience as possible.The report introduces the characteristics of the medical translation. It also introduces theoriginal texts and compares their features. Then the report describes the process of translationsuch as preparation, preliminary translation and proofreading translated texts. The Preparationincludes choosing materials and finding a companion to cooperate with to finish translation.During the process of preliminary translation, the reporter translates the material for the firsttime with many problems remaining unsolved. Proofreading is finished by the writer and hercompanion. The author analyzes some translation examples. Case analysis is the one of themost important part of the report. As the four articles of Science in the News is easy totranslate, the author focuses on analyzing the translation of medical terms and the translationof long and complex sentences in the medical paper. Translation of medical terms andtranslation of long and complex sentences are difficult points in the process of translation. Theauthor puts forward some methods like literal translation, full translation, annotation and usingauxiliary tools in translating medical terms. The paper also introduces division, conversion andaddition in translating long and complex sentences. Medical translation is making progress, yet it has a long way to be perfect. The reportaims at exploring methods and characteristics of medical translation.
