This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of How You Say It: Why You Talk the Way You Do—And What It Says About You(excerpt). The book explains how language affects and shapes social groups, looking to the promised benefits that overcoming language bias can bring to human beings. From the perspective of the Communicative Translation Theory, the report analyses typical cases in the translation task and further discusses the strategies, methods and techniques adopted in the E-C translation of the social science texts concerning linguistics. The report firstly introduces the background of the translation task, the linguistic features of the chosen text, and the organization of the report. It is followed by a description of the translation process including pre-task preparation, the translating process and the feedback on the translation. In the part of the case study, the report makes an overview of Communicative Translation Theory and its application in translation practice and research, and then analyses the typical cases based on this theory, which include the culture-loaded words,text-specific expressions, complex sentences, and specific discourses. The conclusion makes a summary of the case study and this translation practice, and puts forward some suggestions.According to this translation practice, the Communicative Translation Theory has significance in guiding the translation of social science texts. The translator should fully consider the effect translation has on its target language readers, and then properly adopt the method of free translation and the translation techniques of annotation, conversion, and restructuring of the sentences, etc.,which may make the translation convey the communicative effect of the source text, comply with the expressing habits of the target language and intelligible to its target readers.
