| Reading is a compelling way to enhance one’s foreign language ability.The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022)stipulates that150,000 words of reading material are required for junior high school students,which means only via extensive reading can students become well-informed.However,in actual instruction,there are still problems in the English reading classes,such as overemphasis on skill training,ignoring all-round development of the individual,fossilizing the mode of reading teaching etc.Thus,students’ reading literacy,that is,interest and ability still need to be reinforced.This study attempts to introduce the Reading Circle model for junior high school students to improve their reading literacy.It also aims to present an empirical basis and reference for the effective implementation of Reading Circle in future junior high school reading teaching.Based on cooperative learning theory,reader-response theory,and social constructivism,this study adopts the case study to explore the following questions:1.What is the state of English reading literacy for junior high school students in experiment? What are the main existing problems with regard to their English reading literacy?2.What influences does Reading Circle model have on the students’ reading literacy—their ability and character toward reading?3.What are the suggestions for future English reading instruction from the influences of Reading Circle model on students’ reading literacy?This study makes optimum use of qualitative and quantitative research methods to conduct a 12-week experiment with grade 8 students in a middle school in Shangluo City.The relevant data are analyzed using SPSS and the results reveal that(1)before the experiment,students’ reading literacy is below the average level,which manifests that their reading ability needs to be further improved and their reading character needs to be cultivated.(2)The application of Reading Circle model has a positive impact on students’ reading literacy.The most significant changes are reflected in students’ reading character,their passion in reading is vastly stimulated;their reading experience is accreted,and some of them form the habit of English reading on a regular basis.Besides,students’ reading ability,particularly the ability of oral presentation,is improved by virtue of interchanging and sharing.Through the study,some suggestions are proposed by the author,such as educators should explore more applicable approaches for developing students’ reading literacy.Meanwhile,the author deepens the understanding of Reading Circle,reading literacy and English reading instruction;the author also aspires to continue the study in the future English teaching career. |
