| The publication of the research result ’Core Literacy Development of Chinese Students’ has promoted the transformation of English education reform in China from’ ability ’to’literacy ’.The new requirements of the English curriculum standards have also been improved from "comprehensive English language application ability" to "core English subject literacy".In terms of English teaching,reading has always been one of the most important input skills and has been highly valued.In the field of English reading teaching,relevant experts and scholars have gradually shifted their research from "reading ability" to "reading literacy".Currently,one of the key contents of middle school English education is to explore the path of cultivating students’ reading literacy in reading teaching.This study summarizes the research on reading literacy both domestically and internationally through literature review.Based on the latest theoretical framework on the development goals of English reading literacy published by Professor Wang Qiang from Beijing Normal University in 2021,and combined with the views of other scholars,the concept of reading literacy has been defined,further improving the theoretical framework of reading literacy.At the same time,based on this framework,this article conducted a survey and research on the current situation of middle school English reading teaching from the perspective of reading literacy,summarized the problems found in the survey,analyzed the causes,and finally proposed corresponding improvement strategies.The aim is to provide valuable suggestions for teachers to improve students’ English reading literacy in middle school English reading teaching.This study conducted a survey on 485 junior high school students and 65 junior high school English teachers from three schools in Wuxi,Jiangsu Province through questionnaire surveys,interviews,and classroom observations.The main questions discussed and answered were as follows:(1)What is the current situation of middle school English reading teaching from the perspective of reading literacy?(2)What are the main problems and causes of middle school English reading teaching from the perspective of reading literacy?(3)How to improve middle school English reading teaching to promote the cultivation of reading literacy for middle school students?Through the analysis and discussion of the survey results,the study found that there are several problems in junior high school English reading teaching from the perspective of reading literacy: the teaching misunderstanding of emphasizing reading ability over reading character;The cultivation of reading ability is uneven,and the cultivation of individual constituent elements urgently needs improvement;The cultivation of overall reading character is marginalized.In addition,the author attributed the existing problems as follows: teachers did not construct a teaching concept of reading literacy;Lack of teaching methods for teachers’ reading literacy;The teacher’s evaluation of students’ reading literacy is one-sided.Finally,based on the problems and causes of cultivating students’ reading literacy in junior high school English reading teaching,the author puts forward several suggestions: strengthen the theoretical study of reading literacy,construct a teaching concept of reading literacy;Improve reading teaching methods and choose teaching methods that focus on cultivating reading literacy;Utilize diversified reading evaluation methods to comprehensively and effectively evaluate students’ reading literacy;Comprehensive and balanced cultivation of various components of students’ reading ability;Actively cultivate reading character and shape essential literacy. |
