Abstract/Summary:
As an important writer in the history of modern literature,Shi Tuo published a series of works in the 1930 s and 1940 s and achieved remarkable literary and artistic achievements, including a collection of short stories represented by "Gu" and "A Tale of Orchard City",a middle-grade novel "The Librarian of the Hopeless Village",and long novels "Marriage" and "Malan",all of which can be regarded as the best works of modern Chinese fiction. In his novels,Shi Tuo’s independent literary concepts and artistic tentacles write about "contemporary society and human beings" relatively quietly amidst the strife between various schools of thought and criticism. In the process of completing the dialogue with the society of the time,he realizes the closeness and concern for individual life with his creative color of "human sympathizer".The thesis is mainly divided into three chapters: the first chapter will focus on the world of Shi Tuo’s novels, that is,taking the countryside, the city and the small town as the background for the narrative unfolding in his works, and combing Shi Tuo’s main creations in the 1930 s and 1940 s with his personal creative experiences and the literary trends of his time. While using the countryside, cities, and small towns as clues to sort out the main contents of Shi Tuo’s novels, this thesis also attempts to explore the influence of these spatial contexts on the rendering of atmosphere, thematic exposition, and narrative advancement of the novels. The second chapter will focus on the theme of Shi Tuo’s novels. The writer Shi Tuo,who grew up under the influence of the May Fourth New Culture Movement, accomplished the inheritance of cultural criticism, the expression of the aspirations of the times, and the discovery and concern for the individual under the pressure of the times as a "human sympathizer" with his novels in a relatively silent manner amid the cacophony of the 1930 s and 1940 s in modern China. The novel is written in relative silence, and it accomplishes the inheritance of cultural criticism, the expression of the aspirations of the times, and the discovery and concern for individuals under the pressure of the times as "human sympathizers. Therefore, this section will take the genre controversy surrounding Shi Tuo as a guide, and explain the cultural criticism of the countryside and the city in his works in the context of his specific works. The third chapter examines the narrative of Shi Tuo’s novels, exploring the formation of the special structure of The Orchard City and the artistic effects achieved through the analysis of the serialized novel structure, and also analyzing the flexible narrative mode, that is,the presentation of non-plot narratives and the development of special character perspectives,to analyze the narrative art in Shi Tuo’s novels and the narrative effects achieved through it.In conclusion,an exploration of Shi Tuo’s fictional works between 1932 and1948 will not only help to illuminate the cultural psychological structure of an era,but will also allow us to explore the ambiguities and relativities in his works, and to discover some of Shi Tuo’s contemplations and creations in the analysis of his works, whether they are flawed or not.
