| Guo Pu is an important scholar in the history of ancient Chinese linguistics.Guo Pu’s exploration of etymology mainly focused on two works,Erya Zhu and Fangyan Zhu.He accepted the principle of "according to the reading of Chinese characters,people can explain and reveal its implicit meaning”,expressed by Zheng Xuan,and the concept of" Name and Reality,each with its own meaning”,expressed by Liu Xi,using the method of phonetic exegetics to find the reason for the name of things.There are 235 materials in Etya Zhu and Fangyan Zhu to explore etymology.Among the 235 materials,the number of materials using the method of phonetic exegetics is 118,accouting for 50.2%.Besides the method of using exegetics,Guo Pu slso used the description to explore etymology.The number of this materials is 90,accouting for 38.3%.The 78 words explained are the polyphonic in the 90 materials.Guo Pu directly descripted the meaning of the 78 words to explore etymology.This is a characteristic of Guo Pu’s exploration of etymology.Among the 235 materials,131 materials stemed from the previous notes created by predecessors,accounting for 55.7% of the tatal,104 materials were created by Guo Pu,accouting for 44.3% of the tatal.On the whole,Guo Pu’s exploration of etymology has not only carried on the lessons of predecessors,but also created examples by Guo Pu.The proportion of conclusions in accordance with scientific etymology isn’t very high in all materials.Therefor,the value of Guo Pu’s etymology is the inheritance and development of the concept and inspiration which are according to the pronunciation of Chinese characters to looking for hidden secrets.And it also opened up the theory of You Wen Shuo and the theory of inference meaning from sound.This paper collects sound gloss materials in Erya Zhu and Fangyan Zhu,attempting to show Guo Pu’s contribution in etymology and the situation of etymology in Wei Jin Dynasties,and to find a reasonable position for Guo Pu in exegetics.The trajectory of the history of exegetics is more clearly presented. |
