Yan Shigu's exploration of the etymology mainly focused on two works,Ji JiuPian Noted and Han Shu Noted. In concrete practice,Yan Shigu inherited the concept of "Name and Reality, each with its own meaning" in Shi Ming, often using the method of sound gloss to find the reason for the name of nomination word. There are as many as 276 sound gloss materials in Ji Jiu Pian Note and Han Shu Note.Among the 276 sound gloss materials,190 sources can be found, accounting for 69% of the total.Among them, the Shi Ming is the most inherited, with a total of 57 articles, accounting for 30% of the total source gloss.Among them are the inheritance of previous generations' sound gloss achievements and their own innovation and development.Yan Shigu consciously used the method of homophonic annotation when deriving the etymology. The entries in Ji Jiu Pian Noted and Han Shu Noted used homophonic annotation accounted for 38% of the total, ranking in Shi Ming(25%)and Xu Kai's Shuo Wen Jie Zi Xi Zhuan(66.02%),which serve as a bridge. The proportion of conclusions in accordance with scientific etymology is not very high in Yan Shigu's voice gloss, and its value lies mainly in the inheritance and development of the etymology concept and inspiration, such as Wang Shengmei' You Wen Shuo in the Song Dynasty and the theory of inference meaning from sound in Tang Dynasty. The study of exegesis in past time has focused on Yan Shigu's vocabulary and ignored its etymology. This article collects Yan Shigu's sound gloss materials, trying to show his contribution in etymology,in order to broaden the scope of the study of exegetics in this time period, and to find a reasonable position for Yan Shigu's history in exegetics. The trajectory of the history of exegetics is more clearly presented.
