| The Holberg Suite is a set of piano suites written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of the Norwegian poet of Danish origin,Ludwig Holberg.In the following year,Edvard Grieg adapted the suite for piano into a work for strings,subtitled "Suite in the Old Style".Based on the above,the author takes the piano version of the piece as the object of his study,in order to appreciate the compositional characteristics and artistic expression of the work.The paper is composed of an introduction,a body and a conclusion.In the introduction,the purpose and significance of the topic chosen for this paper is explained,and the literature on Edvard Grieg and his Holberg Suite,as well as related books,are collated and summarised.The first section of the main text introduces the composer’s life and the background of the work.the second section analyses the compositional features of the work in terms of its structure,tonal modality and harmonic technique.In the second section,including the inheritance and innovation of the old suites,the use of folk tunings and characteristic harmonies.This provides a good theoretical basis for the subsequent performance of the style.In the third chapter,the theoretical analysis is combined with the author’s own performance experience,and the author discusses the main points of performance and musical treatment specific to each of the dances.This includes a study of technical difficulties such as the rapid running of the hands and the ornamental notes in the work,in an attempt to uncover the deeper meanings expressed in the suite.It is hoped that this study of the performance of the Holberg Suite will provide some reference for the performance of this work on the piano. |
