Education plays an important role in society in the modern world and legal education is certainly no exception.Clinical legal education draws on the use of clinics by medical schools to train interns and promote the study of law through practice and experience.The book of Australian Clinical Legal Education introduces the basic information of legal research and teaching in Australia,and expounds the mode,importance and reflective practice of clinical legal education.This report of translation practice is on the basis of the second chapter and the third chapter of the book Australian Clinical Legal Education.The translation report includes a description,analysis and summary of the whole translation process.Through the study and analysis of the translated materials,the author finds that the text belongs to a simple and standardized college resource text because of its rigorous expression,flexible parts of speech and complex sentence patterns.It is required that the translation not only be rigorous,standardized,and concise,but also be natural,fluent,and authentic.Catford’s theoretical framework of translation shifts theory is a meaningful guide to the translation of such texts with its rigorous framework,clear categories and strong applicability to texts.Guided by the level shifts,the grammatical function is shifted into a relative Chinese vocabulary.There are many special sentence patterns with strong logic in the original text,such as double negative sentences,passive sentences,postpositive attributives.Under the guidance of structure-shift,these sentence patterns are shifted into Chinese structures that conform to the reading habits of the target language readers.A large number of nominalizations are shifted into verbs through class-shift,which makes the translation easy to understand.Unit-shift solves the difficulties of translating long and difficult sentences.Some special vocabularies are shifted into rigorous legal terms through intra-system-shift,enhancing readability for readers of the target language.Under the guidance of Cartford’s translation shifts theory,the problems encountered in practice,such as professional terms,nominalization structures,passive sentence patterns and long and difficult sentences have been effectively solved.As a new practical education mode,clinical legal education plays an important role in training applied legal talents for China.The report is designed to understand the significance of clinical legal education.At the same time,the lessons are learned during this translation practice and experience is summarized to guide future translation practice. |
