National English Curriculum Standards for Regular Senior High Schools(2017 edition)proposes that the goal of high school English curriculum is to develop the students’ core literacy of English subject, that is,the key skills and necessary character.Professor Wang Qiang and her team put forward the new concept of "English reading literacy" in a timely manner, advocating to break through the traditional English reading teaching model that only aims at improving reading ability, and build a teaching mode aimed at cultivating "reading literacy".English reading literacy includes not only the basic abilities that students need in reading, but also the comprehensive literacy needed to promote students’ whole-person development, that is,reading character.English reading character is still a relatively new concept in our country, and it has not attracted enough attention from teaching practitioners. This situation is more obvious in English teaching of high school. Therefore,it is necessary to study high school students’ English reading character. This study took the first-year students of G Middle School in Haikou City as the participants, and collected data through questionnaire survey and interview to answer the following three questions: 1)What is the current situation of high school students’ English reading character? 2)Does high school students’ English reading character affect their English reading performance? 3)What are the factors that affect the development of high school students’ English reading character? By answering these questions, this research aims to help teachers and students improve their understanding of English reading character, urge teachers to pay attention to the cultivation of students’ reading character while improving students’ reading ability so as to realize the comprehensive development of students’ English reading literacy. The results of this study showed that: 1)High school students ’ English reading character was at a medium level, and the development of its dimensions was not balanced.Reading amount was particularly insufficient, and it could not meet the requirements of the curriculum standards;2)English reading character had a positive effect on reading performance. In terms of its specific dimensions, reading interest and reading behavior were positive predictors of reading performance, while other dimensions had no significant impact on reading performance;and 3)High school students’ English reading character was mainly affected by their own reading ability, their English teacher, reading materials,family-related factors and schoolwork pressure. On the basis of the research results, the author puts forward some suggestions on how to cultivate the English reading character of senior high school students.
