In English learning,only through a lot of reading and accumulating certain vocabulary,phrases,sentence expressions,etc.,can students effectively output and improve their language ability and cultural literacy.Therefore,the teaching of English reading in senior high school should not only focus on the mastery of knowledge and the acquisition of information.It should pay more attention to the improvement of students' reading ability and the cultivation of reading character,the development of comprehensive literacy,and thus lay a solid foundation for the students' future study,life and work.Supported by the constructivist learning theory and dialogue theory,first of all,the literature review about domestic and abroad studies on reading literacy was conducted.Based on the views of scholars,the concept of English reading literacy was defined.Secondly,the questionnaire was carried out to investigate the English reading literacy of 450 high school students in Wanzhou,Chongqing.In order to gain a preliminary understanding about the current situation of English reading literacy among high school students,SPSS23.0 statistical software was applied to analyze three dimensions of students' reading ability,reading character,and how teachers helping students improve reading literacy.Then,9 high school English teachers were interviewed,to further explore the specific methods of helping students improve their reading literacy.Research findings are as follows:(1)Students' English reading literacy is at moderate level,and the average reading ability is higher than the reading character.(2)There are significant differences in the English reading literacy of senior high school students due to the gender of students and the education level of their parents,but there are no obvious differences according to different grades.(3)Teachers do well in helping students improve their reading literacy,but “how teachers helping students improve their reading ability” is better than “improving their reading character”.(4)Teachers focus more on the improvement of students' academic achievement.Besides,there are subtle differences between different types of English teachers in the concept and method of developing reading literacy.Through attribution analysis,it is concluded that the main factors are: personal,family,teacher,school and social factors.Therefore,this study puts forward corresponding strategies from five aspects of personal,family,teacher,school and social respectively to help students improve their English reading literacy and promote teachers' reading teaching.As far as students are concerned,they are required to change their reading concepts and develop reading habits,as well as choose reading materials according to their own personalities,interests and hobbies.As for parents,it is necessary to provide resources to create a family reading atmosphere;parents should enhance their awareness and spend parent-child reading time together;they also need to take the initiative to communicate with teachers and promote home-school cooperation.Concerning teachers,they should achieve the following points: make clear the teaching objectives of reading and motivate students' intrinsic needs;get rid of the misunderstanding and grasp the value of reading;introduce cultural knowledge appropriately and focus on cultivating students' emotional attitude,etc.For school,it is necessary to create a scholarly campus atmosphere and emphasize the training of teachers.Of course,the social environment is also a very important aspect.The society should incline educational resources and vigorously promote reading nationwide.
