Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning.Vocabulary learning,especially word reading and spelling,is important but difficult for Art Secondary Vocational School students.Many Chinese and international researchers are interested in the topic of how to improve the students' ability of word reading and spelling.Compared to traditional vocabulary teaching,phonics can help students to understand relationships between letters or letter combinations and sounds,which helps to improve the ability of vocabulary learning.Phonics has been widely applied in the vocabulary teaching,and has been successfully conducted internationally.In recent years,many Chinese researchers have studied phonics and used phonics in vocabulary teaching of primary schools and secondary schools.But research on the application of phonics to English vocabulary teaching in Art Secondary Vocational School is very limited.Hence,this thesis aims to further explore this field.The experimental method was adopted in this research.There were 50 students who studied Beijing Opera in two parallel classes at the Dalian Art School selected as subjects in this thesis.During sixteen-week experiment,Class A was taught by phonics,Class B was taught by traditional vocabulary teaching method.By carrying out tests and questionnaires,this thesis aims to evaluate effects of phonics on students' word reading and spelling ability;and if phonic teaching can enhance students' vocabulary learning interest.In order to achieve these objectives,this thesis has two research questions:(1)What's the effect of phonics on the reading ability of the Art Secondary Vocational School students?(2)What's the effect of phonics on the spelling ability of the Art Secondary Vocational School students?(3)How can phonics raise the vocabulary learning interest of the Art Secondary Vocational School students?Research results show that phonics improved the Art Secondary Vocational School students' word reading and spelling ability.Students were more interested in vocabulary learning than before.Based on research findings,the author suggests that phonics can be used in Art Secondary Vocational School students' vocabulary teaching.Students' word reading and spelling ability can be improved,so does the vocabulary learning interest.In addition,the author identifies limitations of this research,and also provides valuable references for future studies.
