| At the beginning of modern times,with the expansion of the overseas colonies of European and American countries,more western writers began to imagine,explore and describe the "East".Kipling quickly gained a place on the British literary scene with his Oriental works.In 1907,Kipling was awarded Britain’s first Nobel Prize for Literature for his outstanding narrative ability and novel imagination.Kipling used the remote east as a background to depict a colorful eastern world and create an interesting,complex and diverse image of the east.Thesis mainly selected the Kipling’s novel Kim,a collection of short stories of the jungle book,Plain Tales from the Hills and From sea to sea as the object,after colonialism of comparative literature,literary theory,image study as the theoretical basis,and combined with the research method of close reading try to Kipling’s east image thorough and in-depth analysis,Try to excavate its deep meaning and two-way cognition value.This thesis consists of five parts.First,the introduction.The first chapter makes a historical review of the Oriental images in English literature,which is divided into five stages:the Oriental images of imaginary utopia in early English literature;The "Europeanization" of the Orient in the 16 th and 17 th centuries;Oriental images of romance and reality in the 18 th and 19 th centuries;The Oriental colonial illusion in the Victorian era and the "Oriental utopia" image after the 20 th century,each era has its unique Oriental image,which can not be separated from the unique historical environment of each era,finally concluded that Kipling’s Oriental image is an important part of English literature and occupies an important position in the history of literature.The second chapter on the basis of work parsing,Kipling shaping Oriental image from nature,society and people combing and analysis of the three aspects,starting from specific physical environment,in the east is analyzed on the character of the life,finally to the paper summarizes the whole social culture and secular gradually,finally it is concluded that Kipling not only inherited the traditional western literature of Oriental discourse,The image of the east in his works has two sides,which is interwoven with the colonial desire and emotional sustentation,and both romantic and realistic.The third chapter analyzes the cognitive function of Kipling’s Middle Eastern image,and examines and evaluates Kipling’s Eastern image.Kipling’s Oriental images play an important role in our understanding of imperial consciousness and colonial expansion,the author’s dual cultural identity and the cultural relations between the East and the West.The conclusion is a summary of the whole text,briefly describing the literary value and influence effect of Kipling’s Oriental images.Although Kipling’s portrayal of the Oriental images is full of colonialism,his literary achievements are undeniable.As an important part of Kipling’s research,the Oriental images under Kipling’s writings need to be recognized for their important value and further studied.This paper attempts to grasp the Oriental image created by Kipling as a whole.Through in-depth analysis and research,it tries to realize a new interpretation of Kipling’s works,show a sincere and fresh Kipling,and further explore Kipling’s unique value in the history of literature. |
