Through an overview of the translation activities of Kipling and his works in China under the perspective of rewriting theory, this thesis focuses on the variation of Kipling's cultural images during those activities in order to study the process where it shapes Kipling's cultural image in today's China. As a descriptive research, this thesis makes an overview of Kipling and its works in English literature and world literature as well, while analyzing the former factors that affect the translation activities during the period from the May 4th Movement until now.Through the study,it can be concluded that Kipling's child literature had been brought to China since the May 4th Movement and its translation has been growing dramatically since then.During the process,Kipling's cultural image varied several times during different Chinese cultural background, not to mention that Kipling's cultural image in China differentiated from that in English literature and world literature. What's more, the factors that influence the variation of Kipling's cultural image, namely the different ideology between China and western countries, different ideology, different poetics, different genres, different literary critic's comments, different translation strategies, the patronage's manipulation and the market orientation in China's different periods, are so complicated that can not be explained in a nutshell. This thesis eventually helps us better understand the essence of translation activities of a foreign writer and his works in a target culture and strengthened our knowledge about rewriting theory.
