| This study takes Newmark’s translation theory as the framework to explore Hawkes’ translation methods of health-preserving diet culture-loaded words in Hong Lou Meng in order to answer the following research questions: 1)What are the features of health-preserving diet culture-loaded words in Hong Lou Meng? 2)What methods does Hawkes use in translating health-preserving diet culture-loaded words,and what mistranslations exist in Hawkes’ translation? 3)How does Newmark’s translation theory influence the translation of health-preserving diet culture-loaded words?This study adopts the methods of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis.Based on Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of Hong Lou Meng,the study summarizes health-preserving diet culture-loaded words.Next,features of the health-preserving diet culture-loaded words in Hong Lou Meng are concluded,and the translation methods and strategies of these culture-loaded words are summarized.Finally,under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory,the qualitative analysis is made to evaluate Hawkes’ tranlstion.The research results are as follows: 1)The health-preserving diet culture-loaded words in Hong lou Meng have rich cultural connotations and distinctive national traits,which bring great challenges for translators.2)There are two types of mistranslations in Hawkes’ translation: linguistic mistranslations and cultural mistranslations.3)This study explores the translation of culture-loaded words from the perspective of semantic translation and communicative translation,and sums up the translation methods of transliteration and literal translation in semantic translation,and free translation,substitution and omission in communicative translation. |
