The Scholars is a realistic novel with high academic value in Chinese classical literature. The main purpose of The Scholars is to write the real things of the world, reflecting the life scenes of intellectuals living under the imperial examination system in the first half of the eighteenth century. From different angles, the author describes the ups and downs of their life, the contradictions of their realities, the gains and losses of fame, the rise and fall of their official careers, the nobility and inferiority of ideological sentiments, and the advocacy and disillusionment of social ideals. It can be said that it is the first full-scale novel reflecting the fate of intellectuals in the history of Chinese novels.Culture-loaded words play an active role in the transmission of Chinese culture. These culture-loaded words carry rich cultural connotations and integrate with various Chinese traditional cultures.Newmark's translation theory is mainly based on semantic translation and communicative translation. He believed that the former is centered on the original text and tries to accurately convey the original information and preserve the uniqueness of the source language culture;while the latter focuses on the reader and emphasizes the naturalness, fluency and conciseness of the language.Based on the theoretical translation of Peter Newmark's translation theory, this paper selects the English translation of the Yangs' to study and discuss the translation methods of culture-loaded words in The Scholars.By analyzing the culture-loaded words in The Scholars, the following conclusions can be drawn: firstly, when translating culture-loaded words, the Yangs adopt the following translation methods:literal translation, transliteration, omission, substitution and some other translation methods.Specifically, among theses methods, some are applicable to semantic translation, such as literal translation, transliteration and so on;omission, substitution and paraphrase are applicable to communicative translation.Other methods involve both semantic and communicative translation.Secondly, through the analysis,it turns out that the Yangs' translation conforms more to semantic translation, for it can better retain Chinese cultural flavor and thus promote cultural exchange.Thirdly, semantictranslation and communicative translation are not completely contradictory but complementary.A good translation is usually a perfect combination of both of them.Only in this way can translators better translate culture-loaded words and achieve the real purpose of cross-cultural communication. There are six chapters in this thesis.First,Chapter I is the introduction, which elaborates the research setting, phenomenon, method, purpose, value and structure of the paper.Chapter II is the literature review, which mainly gives an overview of the definition of the culture-loaded words, the existing research results on the translation of culture-loaded words and The Scholars and a view of Peter Newmark's translation theory and its application.Chapter ? is the theoretical basis, which mainly introduces Newmark's three classified types of texts,as well as the semantic translation and communicative translation of Newmark.Chapter ? mainly introduces this work and summarizes the types of culture-loaded words.Chapter V analyzes the methods adopted by the Yangs in The Scholars based on Newmark's translation theory.Chapter ? is the conclusion, which mainly summarizes the research results and significance of this paper. It also points out the problems in the research process and proposes effective guidance and solutions.
