Ci(lyrics)began in Liang Dynasty,formed in Tang Dynasty,and reached its zenith in Song Dynasty.Song lyrics is a brilliant pearl in the crown of ancient Chinese literature.It likes a fragrant and beautiful garden in the ancient Chinese literature.It as well as Tang poetry has always been called superb works of literature,both of which represent the prosperity of a generation of literature.Then the press compiled the lyrics into the book named Song Lyrics.Xu Yuanchong has great attainments in translating Chinese classical literature.His translation of Song lyrics(Song Ci)enjoys the beauty of sound,sense and form,so his version is glorified.The current research on the translation of Song Lyrics is mainly analyzed from the perspective of translatology,and most of these researches are micro-level,such as comparing the translating versions of different translators,or discussing the culture-loaded phrases,allusions and translation strategies in Song lyrics.Up to now,few scholars has made pragmatics research on Xu Yuanchong’s English version of Song lyrics.This thesis is based on the linguistic adaptation theory put forward by the pragmatist Jef Verschueren,it tries to make a study of the English version of Song lyrics in Song Lyrics in Paintings from the linguistic perspective.The core of linguistic adaptation theory is that language use is a process of constant choice,and its four research dimensions are structural objects of adaptability,contextual correlates of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation processes.These four aspects are consistent with the cognitive factors in the use of language,therefore this paper will analyze the English translation of the Song lyrics by Xu Yuanchong from these four dimensions.In this study,it adopts the document analysis method.From the perspective of adaptation theory,it sums up Xu Yuanchong’s English version of Song lyrics;it explores the dynamic adaptations in Xu Yuanchong’s translation in Song Lyrics in Paintings,and it analyses the translation strategies and methods adopted in adaptation.This thesis aims at discussing the significance of adaptation theory in translating ancient Chinese poetry by studying Xu Yuanchong’s English version of Song lyrics.First,it expounds the connotation of adaptation theory,and it discusses the enlightenment of adaptation theory to translation from the four analytical dimensions of adaptation theory.Then,combining the characteristics of Chinese cultural translation,through the analysis of bilingual comparative texts of Song Lyrics in Paintings,this paper discusses the role of translators in translating ancient Chinese poetry,and analyses the choices and responsibilities of translators when translating ancient Chinese poetry: how can the behaviour of catering and accommodating western thoughts and harming national culture be reasonably avoided?The thesis is divided into five sections: Introduction,Literature Review,Theoretical Framework,Case Analysis and Conclusion.The introduction introduces the background to the research,the purpose of the research,the research methods and the research framework.In the part of literature review,it expounds the present research situation of English versions of Song Lyrics,and finds the shortcomings of early studies,which shows the necessity of this study.The theoretical framework comprises the basic concepts,three core concepts,and four dimensions of adaptation theory.In the case analysis part,from the perspective of adaptation theory,it analyses how the translator dynamically adapts in the process of poetry translation,to achieve his translation purpose.The conclusion part summarizes the full text. |
