An E-C Translation Of Killer Chef (Excerpts) And Its Work Report

This is an English-Chinese translation report of Killer Chef which was written by James Patterson.Killer Chef is a typical detective novel,which mainly describes three chain murders that happened in New Orleans.In the end,the hero and his team bring the murderer to justice through trails of clues.The novel highlights the struggle between justice and evil,so it is popular for its mysterious plot and the hero’s persistence and professional dedication.Detective novels are easy to understand.Its main purpose is to please readers.Therefore,they are regarded as popular novels,which are considered as the typical vocative texts.According to Newmark,communicative translation should be the most suitable strategies in translating vocative texts.The translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the research background,significance and key elements of the translation report.The second chapter briefly introduces translation works,including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation works.The third chapter introduces the main content of the Text Type Theory and the concept of semantic translation and communicative translation.Chapter Four presents the case study.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Type Theory,this chapter analyzes the source text from three aspects: characterization,plot and atmosphere building,which focuses on solving the key and difficult points of the translation report.Chapter Five summarizes gains and limitations of the report as well as some suggestions for future practice.After the case analysis,it finally concludes that in translating detective novels,communicative translation should be the main method,so the translator is free to change form and structure of the source text so as to make the translated version more acceptable.In the process of translating the descriptions about characters,communicative translation,free translation and domestication is considered to be useful;as for plot reproduction,exaggeration and addition are suggested to be used;in the aspect of atmosphere building,free translation and shifting should be better options.The translator has a deeper understanding of the characteristics and translation of detective novels through the translation practice,which will be of benefit to the guidance of the similar translation practice in the future.
