This is a translation report on the novel translation of The Other Family from English into Chinese. The Other Family is one of the best-selling novels written by English famous novelist Joanna Trollope. The translator chooses the first four chapters of this novel as the original text and put them into translation practice, and finally draws a conclusion based on this translation practice about translation difficulties, translation methods and translation strategies. The novel is developed staring form the death of an English famous singer Richie Rossiter, from which the author is aimed at revealing the kindness and beauty as well as selfishness and greed of humans’to readers. During this practice, the translator found that the novel involves a lot of English cultural backgrounds which are the nuts during translation process, so it is with the translation of some words and sentences. However, the contents of the original text and the plots of the novel are the key points for translator to transfer. Consequently, the translator chooses Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical basis of this translation practice. The main body of the report including analysis of the translation difficulties encountered during the process of translation as well as translation methods and strategies under the guidance of communicative translation theory following several examples respectively.All in all, it is the rule for the translator to follow during the translation practice. That is to say, the translation methods and the translation strategies which are applied into the translation process should be based on the translation theories. Making preparation is very important, including understanding the details of the original work and the thoughts of the author which will make much contribution to the translation process.
