A Report On The E-C Translation Of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

In recent years,many English popular novels have been introduced into China,which has exerted a tremendous influence on China's publishing industry.Therefore,the translation of English popular novels has attracted more and more attention.In view of the fact that related studies on popular novel translation are still far from being adequate,this thesis may be helpful to further researches in this area.Selecting the first two chapters of Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine as the source text,the author of this thesis discusses how to deal with the difficulties encountered in this translation project under the guidance of Peter Newmark,s communicative translation theory.On the basis of the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and the corresponding translation strategies applied,the author of this thesis analyses the guiding role of communicative translation in this translation project.The core idea of communicative translation theory is to convey communicative messages,striving to make the translation have the same effect on the target language readers as the original text on the source language readers.Communicative translation attaches great importance to readability and fluency of the target text.So,translators are required to have a strong organizational ability of language so as to make the translation more natural and fluent.Guided by communicative translation theory,this thesis aims to explore strategies for popular novel translation from words,sentences,dialogues and punctuation marks.By applying strategies like word conversion,sentence reconstruction,amplification,omission and so on,the translator tries to maximize the readability of the target text,thus the validity of communicative translation theory in English-Chinese popular novel translation can be examined.
