| The original source text examined and translated in this report is excerpted from Sir Elton-The Definitive Biography.Written by Philip Norman,it records the life of the music idol,who is known worldwide for his historic contribution to popular music.The report translates the first chapter of the biography,which depicts Elton John’s childhood.This report is conducted from the perspective of two translation theories: semantic and communicative.Following analysis and summary of the translation process,the conclusion proposes that emphasis should be placed on the expressive effect of the translation to enable the effective transfer of information.Chapter 1 outlines the selection of materials and text analysis methods employed.In Chapter 2,the semantic translation and communicative translation theories proposed by Newmark are discussed in-depth,followed by an introduction to the translation process in Chapter 3.The case analysis conducted in Chapter 4 discusses the guiding significance of the various translation methods used in the project,including literal and liberal translation,and splitting,restructuring,conversion and omission methods.Chapter 5 concludes the report.Having focused on both authenticity and creativity when translating Sir Elton-The Definitive Biography,this report convincingly demonstrates the applicability of communicative and semantic translation theories when translating biographical literature.It proposes two key points.First,regarding the documentary language employed in the biography through which information is vividly communicated,original expressions should be conveyed as precisely as possible under the guidance of communicative translation theory.However,these should not be restrained by their original sentence structure,enabling the translation to achieve appropriate communicative effect.Second,fixed expressions and literary sentences should obey the principles of semantic translation and the original style should be reproduced as much as possible without impacting on the reader’s comprehension.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 35... |
