| Institutional translation, despite its long history, was not frequently discussed in translation research until the 1980s.Institutional translation broadly refers to translation activities carried out in institutional settings. The term "institution" is elusive. Thus, there is not yet a unified definition of "institutional translation".Translation studies conducted from this perspective are insufficient. At the same time, the UN has long-history translation practices, but translation studies focusing on international organizations are also insufficient. From 1 November 2020 to 15 October 2021,the researcher worked as a translation intern at the IAEA,mainly responsible for translating different types of documents. Thus, this report aims to study the texts translated from the perspective of institutional translation, summarizing translation principles and analyzing the impact of an institution on translation activities. This report adopts the four translation regimes by Koskinen, analyzes original texts, first drafts and the final versions, summarizes translation strategies of each type of texts, and concludes the principles of faithfulness, consistency, and equivalence. The researcher also concludes that institutions have a "shaping influence" on translation activities.Translators may change their translation habits and adopt different strategies with the help of Computer-Aided Translation(CAT)tools to achieve different governance purposes. The researcher hopes that this report will serve as a reference for those interested in working at an international organization, draw on the past practice, and lay a solid foundation for future work. The main body of this report contains five chapters. The first chapter introduces the internship program, the IAEA translation work, and the significance of the task. The second chapter details the translation process. The third chapter presents the institutional translation and the analytical framework. The fourth chapter is the case analysis. The author adopts the four-layered regimes, analyzes and summarizes the translation strategies. The last part is a conclusion, summarizing translation principles, the impact of an institution on translation activities, and looking into the future. |
