| Parenthesis can be a word, phrase,or sentence that is inserted into a sentence.Translating parentheses is met with many problems.Although scholars at home and abroad have done a series of researches on parenthesiss, most of them focus on its definition and classification, and there are a few studies on translation strategies. In this paper, the author will discuss how to translate the parentheses in academic texts with respect to specific cases selected from the translation. The author selected a chapter from Computing the Mind:How the Mind Really Works by Shimon Edelman and studied the translation methods of parentheses in academic texts.Shimon employed a large number of compound sentences with parentheses. These parentheses varied in type, length, causing difficulties in reading and translation.Translators need to have deep understanding of them so as to convey the author’s message. This paper adopted a case study approach to explore the translation methods of parentheses.Based on three-dimensional adaptive adaption of eco-translatology and the translation, the paper summarize four translation methods for parenthesis:translating with parenthesis marks, splitting, linear translation, and restructuring. The bracket method was applied to short and simple insertions. The second method was adopted in parentheses which had complete grammatical structures and contained too much information. The third method was mostly applicable to noun phrase. The last one was applicable if the inserted is an important supplement to the host sentence and can be integrated into the main sentence without causing unnecessary troubles in understanding. The author will use some examples to show the translation method and the reasons. With thorough analysis and research,it is found that translation strategies varied in accordance with parentheses, and translators need to flexibly adopt appropriate translation strategies. |
